Benefits of Foot Toys
Foot toys are small toys that birds can easily pick up with their feet and chew with their beak. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures that, depending on their design, can offer a variety of enrichment benefits (chewing, foraging, preening an mechanical manipulation) to pet birds.
- Toys with destructible components like paper, vine or wood will promote chewing activity essential to beak health.
- Foraging opportunities can easily be created out of many foot toys that allow for treats to be stuffed or hidden.
- Any toys that promote movement also offer the benefit of exercise. Foot toys provide essential feet and beak exercise that will help to improve muscle strength, balance, coordination and foot dexterity.
- Toys with small moveable parts encourage exploration and manipulation by beaks and tongues.
Foot toys are great for playing inside and outside the cage. Consider creating a "toy chest" in the bottom of your birds cage to contain a variety of foot toys.
