At Second Skin, we pride ourselves in offering best-in-class solutions to help you eliminate unwanted noise and soundproof your car. Everything we sell has been tested in the field and in the lab to ensure you get the best possible results. We offer a comprehensive line of the best car insulation solutions for your vehicle. Whether you have rattling metal distorting your speakers, a car restoration side-gig, or just want to create a bubble of comfort for yourself as you drive down the highway, we have the high quality materials that will get you to your destination.
Why do cars make so much noise?
Noise inside the passenger compartment of a car comes from one of three sources:
To fix wind noise, you need to plug the holes. To stop structure borne noise, you have to damp the metal. To eliminate airborne noise, you need to block it with a noise barrier.
Quality materials matter. You’ll only make that mistake once.
Soundproof foam will reduce interior noise and echoes to improve the acoustics of your sound system and create a more comfortable car environment. Foam products will not block noise, and they will not stop metal from rattling. Foam can be extremely effective when used appropriately, but you should not buy foam products and expect them to be the all-around soundproofing solution to your vehicle.
Mega Zorbe hydrophobic melamine foam sheets are 1/2" of open cell foam with some pretty incredible properties. We went to Germany to find the highest quality melamine foam, and then brought it to the United States for a proprietary hydrophobic treatment process. By waterproofing the entire thickness, it’ll remain water resistant for the foam’s entire life. Mega Zorbe is an aerospace grade product that will add premium heat and sound insulation to your vehicle.
Mega Zorbe insulating foam has a high sound absorption coefficient (75%+ at mid-to-high frequencies), acts as a superior thermal insulator (r-value per inch: 4.16), and includes best-in-class customer support as we’re available to you until you complete your build and beyond.

DecideDecide what parts of the car you want to insulate first: doors, car roof, or trunk lid. Insulating each part of the vehicle has its benefits. Hydrophobic melamine foam is the best solution for reducing echoes and speaker back waves inside door cavities. It’s also an excellent insulator that you can use on the car roof above the headliner or on the lid of the trunk. For high heat applications (in engine bays or near heat sources), use Mega Block which is the same high quality foam with a radiant heat shield on one side. |
RemoveIt’s best to install your acoustic foam at the same time you apply other car soundproofing materials, because you’ll already have plastic panels and upholstery removed. Be careful to avoid breaking plastic trim parts or any fasteners. Remove any damaged factory insulation after you’ve dismantled the interior. If the insulation is in good shape, you can choose to leave it and save yourself the trouble. More insulation is always better, because the r-values are additive! Ensure there’s no debris, rust, dirt, or waxy oils on the application surface. Detailed step-by-step guides can be found on our website or one of the many automotive forums. |
MeasureMeasure the surface area where you want to apply Mega Zorbe. For more intricate areas, start by making a pattern of an appropriate size on paper or cardboard and then transfer that to the open cell foam sheet. Taking the time to measure will give you a cleaner install and avoid wasting material. Mega Zorbe should only be trimmed to size with sharp scissors or a sharp razor blade to avoid damaging or ripping the foam. Be sure you have at least 1/2” of clearance, as Mega Zorbe needs to be fluffed out to effectively absorb sound and heat. If you don’t have the clearance space, you can substitute our Heat Wave Pro jute insulation. |
InstallDo not cover wires, drain holes, or mechanical devices. For best results, install Mega Zorbe directly on top of your sound deadener or the car’s metal surface. Mega Zorbe comes with either a peel and stick backing or with no adhesive included. Be careful removing the peel and stick backing as it’s extremely sticky. If using a different adhesive, we recommend a high tack spray adhesive or super strong double sided tape. No matter what adhesive you choose to use, hold the material firmly to the application surface until you are sure it has bonded. For additional sound absorption and heat insulation, cut and stack Mega Zorbe on top of itself to 1” or even 2” of total thickness. Both sound absorption and heat insulation properties scale with increased thickness. |

Sound DeadeningSound deadening is the hidden secret behind the upholstery of any car project. To reduce road noise, use Damplifier Pro to stop the structural noise generated by vibrating metal. Stop the vibrations, stop the noise. |
Sound BlockingAfter you’ve damped the structural noise, stop airborne noise with a sound blocking layer covering the entire floor and inside the doors. Luxury Liner Pro has a high r-value and STC rating, making it an ideal insulating noise barrier for engine, exhaust, and road noise. |
Sound AbsorptionFurther quiet things down inside your vehicle with sound absorption materials. Mega Zorbe has a high r-value, making it excellent for the car roof, and a high sound absorption coefficient to reduce interior echoes and improve acoustics in door cavities. |
