Most late model vehicles that still use a distributor, can have 20-50,000 volts running through it. This voltage has to move from the coil, into and through the distributor and out through the spark plug wire and through the spark until it ignites inside the cylinder. Many times worn spark plugs and wires can back this voltage up into the distributor and/or ignition coil and cause it to short out and fail. Performing a tune up often (every few years) can prevent this from happening and can save or preserve the life of a distributor. Many other factors can cause a distributor to fail. If you have the above situation in your car, check if the distributor is not fine and need to be replaced. If it is confirmed that the distributor has to be replaced, please do not continue to use the bad distributor.

Remove the old distributor and wiresPlease remove the old distributor first and mark one by one before disconnecting all wires connected to the distributor. (It is better to mark a position on the outside of the distributor housing where the distributor is mounted on the engine and mark the engine mounting point.) |
Mark the position of the rotor and engine mounting pointThe rotors in the new distributor need to match this position perfectly (Please be careful not to move the rotor position when removing and installing the distributor). Then remove the old distributor, mark your old distributors rotor position inside the housing of your new distributor and mark the location on the outside of the distributor that lines up with your engines mounting point. |
Install the New DistributorPlease reconnect the distributors wires according to the mark and replace the cap. Re-fasten the distributor in the same spot as the old distributor, lining up the marked location on the distributor housing with the engine mounting point. (Some distributors have a skew-gear drive fitting. It may be difficult to align the scribe marks without turning the distributor slightly.) |
Check the details in your car service manualYou can start the vehicle after checking whether it is normal or not. If not, you need to adjust the rotor slightly. Stop the engine and place a timing light on the #1 spark plug. Then restart the engine and adjust the timing by rotating the distributor housing by very small amounts. The above installation steps do not apply to all models. There are variations in the procedure for removing and refitting the distributor on some cars.
