What are the Signs of a Bad Throttle Body?

1. Stalling

Since the throttle body is dirty or faulty, the engine may stall.

2. Unstable idle

The PCM bases its idle calculations on a predetermined amount of airflow through the throttle body. When that predetermined value isn’t met, the engine may fail to idle properly.

A faulty throttle body can result the condition of misfiring and rough running.

How to replace a throttle body?

1. Open your hood and locate your engines throttle body.

2. Remove the air intake duct at the throttle body.

3. Inspect the throttle body ports for carbon build-up. Throttle bore wear is also common after long periods of time and throttle body assemblies will need to be replaced if worn.

4. Remove the throttle cable from the throttle body control lever.

5. Disconnect any air or vacuum hoses from the throttle body.

6. Remove the throttle position sensor from the throttle body.

7. Remove the throttle body mounting screws and remove the throttle body assembly. Discard the old gasket and install a new gasket between the throttle body and manifold during installation.

8. Match the new throttle body to the old throttle body making sure that sensors, hoses, and cables are all routed correctly to the new throttle body and that it mounts correctly to the intake manifold.

9. Install in the reverse procedure and follow manufacturer torque specifications during installation.
