Any misalignment in the sprockets, be it in a perpendicular or parallel alignment, means excessive wear on the sprocket teeth as well as the drive chain. This wear is induced via excessive drag from the misalignment, which eats horsepower. In a worst case scenario you’ll throw or break the chain and your day is done. To prevent these issues you simply need to align your sprockets and the best way to handle that is with a laser alignment tool. Most laser alignment tools designed for chain sprockets mount the laser directly over the centerline of the chain teeth.
