The Master Lock danger tag is made of an industrial-grade polypropylene that resists many corrosive chemical solvents, bases, acids, UV exposure, rain, and humidity; functions in temperatures from -50 to 220 degrees F (-46 to 104 degrees C); withstands over 80 lb./36 kg of pullout force, exceeding Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 1910.147(c)(5)(ii)(C)(2) standard; and has a red, white, and black "Danger" logo fused into both sides. Lined rewriteable areas for task-specific details are on both sides of the tag, which measures 3 x 5-3/4 inches/7.62 x 14.6 cm (H x W). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right.) This tag is for use as part of a lockout/tagout (LOTO) safety procedure required at facilities where a device or energy source needs to be isolated during maintenance or repair. When used according to manufacturers recommendations, this product is covered by a limited lifetime warranty against defects in workmanship or materials.

Lockout/tagout (LOTO) safety procedures, as defined by OSHA, require that tagout devices be durable and standardized. Tags used as tagout devices are also called safety tags or lockout tags. Safety tags use color and warning text to temporarily prohibit machine operation or power activation, and help reduce accidents, during maintenance or repair. Tags are also required to have a means to identify a person authorized to remove them, and a means to attach to the target machine or control. They usually have a hole that can fit a padlock shackle, and can also be used to provide information wherever locks are used.
