Step 1

Start with the course side to file nails down quickly. Place the board flat on the floor. Encourage your dog to put his paw on the board. As soon as he does mark that behavior with a "yes" or a "click" and then reward him with a treat. Repeat this a few times.

Step 2

Gradually increase the incline of the board. Encourage your dog to scratch the board by saying "scratch" or some other word that will indicate to scratch. After each scratch, mark that behavior with a "yes" and a treat.

Step 3

Incline the board even more. Gradually withhold the treat longer to encourage your dog to scratch more. Also encourage him to use both paws.

Step 4

As your dog is scratching, find the angle of incline that works best for him (60 to 80 degrees is ideal). Praise your dog for his hard work; this should be a fun time for both you and your dog!

Training for the Side Nails

After your dog has become familiar to scratching the board then work on his side nails. In order to file all four nails, rotate the board to the side while your dog is scratching. By rotating the board to one side it will file the nails on that side.

Training for the Back Nails

Advance Training. Rest the board against a couch or stairs. Train your dog to put his front paws above the board. Use a treat to get your dog to extend his body for the treat, causing his hind legs to scratch. Mark each scratch with a "yes" and a treat. Search for videos on back nail training for additional advice.
