Alliance Chemical - Xylene

One Gallon

Xylene is an organic chemical compound. It is also known as dimethylbenzene or Xylol. It is known by many names but consistently sought after for its immense utility and usefulness.

It is a solvent that is used in synthetic enamels, oil-based paints, lacquer, varnishes, and epoxy. Unlike some thinners such as toluene, it evaporates at a slower rate, giving you the ability to use less and get more.

  • It is effective to use in hot weather for brushing applications
  • It may also be used as a clean-up solvent for tools and equipment immediately after use. Use this in place of toluene, if needed
  • It is a colorless, flammable, non-viscous, toxic liquid. It does not dissolve in water but is miscible with various organic liquids

PAINT & VARNISHES

In thinning paints and varnishes, it can be substituted for toluene where slower drying is desired, and thus is used by conservators of art objects in solubility testing.

REMOVE PARAFFIN

Xylene is used to remove paraffin from dried microscope slides prior to staining. After staining, microscope slides are put in xylene prior to mounting with a coverslip.

PLASTIC INDUSTRY

Xylene is the principal precursor to terephthalic acid, both monomers used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles and polyester clothing.

LEATHER INDUSTRY

Like the individual isomers, the mixture is colorless, sweet-smelling, and highly flammable. Areas of application include the printing, eraser, and leather industries.
