Grounding the trailer wiring on the frame close to the coupler is easiest and equally effective, but if you have an aluminum frame trailer or dump trailer, you must connect the ground wire back to the light assembly to adequately ground it.
Most trailer lighting is grounded through mounting hardware, which makes it easier to install, so ground the trailer connector to the frame anywhere, and when directly grounded, the lighting has adequate grounding.
