Description

Dansco Coin Albums have been a longtime companion for both expert numismatists and beginning coin collectors. The Trade Dollars 1873-1878 Dansco Album comes in a 5/8" binder and holds up to 24 coins. The album has 3 Dansco pages (series: 6172-1 to 6172-3), each one holding and displaying all Trade dollars minted from 1873-1878. Originally minted to compete with Asian dollars, U.S. Trade dollars were legal tender in the United States only for a brief period. William Barber was in charge of the design, and through their mintage, Trade dollars had several variations in both the obverse and the reverse. Only four 1885 Trade dollars are known to exist. One of these coins sold for $1 million in 2004. With the Morgan dollars already in circulation, the Treasury decided to redeem all Trade dollars in 1887. Trade dollars are made of 90% silver and 10% copper. They measure 38.1 mm in diameter, and each weighs 27.22 grams. Trade dollars were coined at the Philadelphia, Carson City and San Francisco Mints. Dansco Coin Albums have their pages attached with metal screws, making it easy to add and replace.
