New strings should always be tuned and stretched out to avoid quickly being out of tune. To prevent this, leave your instrument stretched tightly overnight to let the strings become flexible.
A new ukulele with a brand new set of strings may frequently slip out of tune. Because Ukuleles come pre-strung with nylon strings which have never been brought up to pitch, they will go out of tune immediately due to the elasticity of the nylon and the looseness of the knot holding it in place. If you tune up your new instrument, and within minutes your ukulele chords sound dissonant, it doesnt mean your instrument is broken. It just means you may have to keep re-tuning the strings over the next several hours or days. Over time, the strings will "settle" and begin to consistently hold their pitches.
How to Stretch Ukulele Strings
Stretch each string
Placing your index and middle finger under the string and pulling it up slightly. Repeat this on various places on the fret board with each string.
Stretch the first string by grabbing it in the middle and gently pulling straight up four or five times, don’t lift the string much further than half an inch off the fret board. Repeat the process for the other three strings.
Tighten the strings to raise the pitch. Loosen the strings to lower the pitch.Absolutely do not tighten the strings too much. This can break your instrument, and the strings may snap off.
Tune it again
Tune your ukulele again, and then repeat the stretching process. After several rounds of string stretching, your ukulele will start to hold its tune for longer periods of time. Depending on how often you play, it could take a few days up to a few weeks for your new strings to get settled in.
The ukulele has a rich, Melodious Tone that is sure to put a smile on your face and those around you. Its a perfect pick-me-up whether in your bedroom by yourself or at a party with friends. The ukulele can be played by anyone, young or old, musician or non-musician, with or without musical knowledge or experience.
You can take it virtually anywhere. Toss it in the back of your car. Take it to the beach, camping, party.
