This is the second addition to the Lunar New Year Series, issued on February 5 1994 in Pomona CA as a sheet of 20 29-cent stamps. Chinese-American artist Clarence Lee created a paper-cut image of each animal of the zodiac. This sheet features the royal dog of China, the Pekingese, and celebrates one of the oldest festivals found in all of history. The design also includes calligraphy by Lau Bun that translates in English as "Year of the Dog," and the greeting "Happy New Year!" The Lunar calendar in 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018 is symbolized by the dog, the 11th animal in a 12 animal cycle. See other items from the Chinese Lunar New Years series.
