Tips on filtration

A 10 plate wine filter will run between 100 and 150 gallons before clogging, provided that the wine is well settled and/or has been filtered already through a rougher pad. Again, this is a general rule and it is very important to understand that a wide range of factors can influence this.

  • Immerse the filtering sheets in water before use to saturate.
  • Allow them to absorb water for at least 5 minutes before installing tightly into the filter
  • A young wine (30 days) is not ready for fine filtering.

Filter Pads for Colombo plate Filters.

The Ultimate Filters for your Homebrewer!

These Fermtech filter pads are made of pure natural materials and cationic chargers, different amounts of cellulose slit fibers derived from deciduous and coniferous trees, kieselguhr and perlite.

Please note that all pad filters are rated nominal, meaning that about 90-95% of all particulate matter at the micron rating will be filtered out.

  • These are not reusable.
  • Be able to run between 10 and 15 gallons of wine per pad in the filter
  • Offer 3 different sizes for all filtering needs!
  • Filtering is the last step in the production of wine and requires knowledge of some fundamental precautions.
  • Each pad size is 20 cm x 20 cm (8" x 8")

Fermtechs Filters..

Each pad has an entry side and an exit side, distinguishable by their different textures. The entry side is a billowy type texture, frequently called the "rough" side; and the exit side has a crosshatch pattern and is commonly called the "smooth" side. For more information on how to load filter sheets into your plate and frame filter, see our Guide to Plate Filtering.

Super #2 ColomboSuper #2 Colombo

#1 Coarse

#1 Coarse (8 micron) filters are the best choice when there is visible sediment in your wine.

A #1 filter will remove almost all visible sediment and is less likely to clog than a #2 0r #3 filter. Best for Fruit/White/Red wines and beer or kombucha.

#2 Polishing

Use a #2 (2 Micron) filter for brilliant filtration when your wine has already naturally settled out.

Too many yeast cells in solution or sediment at the bottom will quickly clog a #2 filter. Best for Red/White wines.

#3 Sterile

#3 are are hard caged , 0.8 micron filters. Ideal for filtering white wine to give it that perfect shine or light red wines.

Wine to be filtered should already be very clear as this filter will load up quickly with material. It is a common practice to pre-filter already settled wine with a #2 filter and then filter with this .#3 Sterile filter. Best for White wines.
