IS THE PLASTIC FREE OF HARMFUL CHEMICALS? Yes. It’s BPA- and Phthalate-free, and any off-gassing is non-toxic. Off-gassing, not to be confused with harmful outgassing, exists in any form of plastic or vinyl. It occurs when gasses are released from plastic products. You’ve probably noticed this off-gassing effect when opening up a brand new shower curtain, pool float, or beach ball, for example. |
DOES THE PRODUCT HAVE A SMELL? Like most plastics, there is a smell shortly after manufacturing. However, unlike some imported plastics the off-gassing smell is familiar and subtle. Of course, if you have olfactory sensitivity, you may notice a familiar, faint smell like a shower curtain or pool float, and like other forms of vinyl this innocent scent will wear off rather quickly. |
CAN THE MATERIAL TOLERATE HEAT? Yes, it can take some heat. First know that this material is fire retardant, meaning it can’t hold a flame. You can place things like coffee cups on it without a problem, but you wouldn’t want to take a hot frying pan straight from the stove and rest it on this or any kind of the material. Our general rule for safety is to conservatively keep anything over about 150 degrees F off the material. While it may be able to take more heat than that, if you think something may be too hot to place on it, you’re probably right. |
DOES THIS PRODUCT LAY FLAT EASILY?
While many of our products often come rolled up for ease of shipping, the material is formulated to lay flat at 72-74 degrees F. If you don’t see this result within a few minutes, here are a few ways you can speed things up.
A modest source of heat will soften the material to flatten faster if needed. You can:
- Use a blow dryer on a warm setting, holding it about 8 inches from the material. It will soften and settle pretty quickly. For larger items, feel free to place heavy objects on the sections as you soften them.
- You can run hot water on the material or let it sit in hot water for a few seconds. This is extremely easy to do if the item can be fully submersed.
- If it’s warm and sunny outside, lay the material on top of a towel or something similar in the direct sun for a few minutes.
