Representing Uzoma, meaning "the good way" in the Igbo language, this mask is crafted by artisan Abdul Aziz Mohamadu through an intensive process requiring both patience and skill. The artisan hand carves the mask from local sese wood, then allows it to dry for two weeks before sanding and hand painting the elongated nose, closed eyes, mouth and dotted incision details. The Nigerian-style mask, intended for wall use, is then painted with striking yellow and blue highlights, and finished with clay for an aged, vintage look.
This lovely art mask can be used as a decoration on a wall. The attention to detail used in carving this piece highlights the natural beauty of the wood. Each piece is hand-finished, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind work of art. A fantastic choice for home or office decor.
Abdul Aziz Mohamadu
In 2000, I went into carving and since then I have never regretted it. But I havent abandoned painting completely either.
I am now self employed and there are five assistants working with me. In addition, I have taught seven other people how to carve, and they are also on their own now and doing well. When I get large orders, I call on them for their assistance. I look forward to training more people in this craft and also to continuing with my paintings.

Abdul has a dream of establishing an art academy for carving and sharing the African culture that is so closely tied to wood carving. So far, he has trained over 30 people but hopes that number can grow to be in the hundreds with an academy.
