TotalBoat TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat and Primer forms a waterproof barrier to protect against osmotic blistering - above and below the waterline. For best results, thin with TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200. If rolling, use a 3/16" nap or foam solvent-safe roller cover.
A barrier coat is recommended on fiberglass boats as a watertight primer applied before application of bottom paint. TotalBoat TotalProtect is a heavy-duty, epoxy-based barrier coat and primer preferred by professionals to prevent water intrusion from creating blisters in gelcoat & fiberglass. It also acts as a tie-coat to help any coatings applied over it adhere as strongly as possible. And it protects underwater metals from damage. Compatible with all paints. For maximum adhesion, recoat or overcoat when the surface is thumbprint tacky. Overcoating times vary based on temperature & humidity. The "thumbprint test" lets you know when to begin overcoating. For this simple test, press your thumb gently into the primer. If you leave a thumbprint, but dont see paint on your thumb, TotalProtect is ready to overcoat. To begin, apply the first coat of TotalProtect. After 45 minutes, do the thumbprint test. If not ready, check again every 15 minutes.
Beware of competing products claiming to create an effective barrier coat with just 2 coats, as all application methods do not lay down the barrier coat at the same mil thickness per coat. Sprayer type, brush type, & roller cover thickness all make a difference in mil thickness per coat. Regardless of application method 8-12 mils DFT is key.
APPLICATION: Use a brush (natural bristle), roller (3/16" nap or foam solvent-safe cover is best) or spray (airless, conventional, or HVLP). Mil thickness/number of coats for rolling depends on the roller cover:
THINNING: TotalProtect is thick & typically needs thinning. Use TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 only.
