Say No to Plastic Bags: A Plea for Our Environment
Plastic shopping bags are not sustainable and pollute our environment. They clog landfills and waterways, harm wildlife, and litter our communities. Each person uses 500 bags per year on average, and less than 5% are recycled.
Facts about plastic bags:
•Made from Non-decomposable polyethylene, plastic bags take 1,000 years to break down.
•Billions of bags are discarded per day, polluting rivers, lakes and oceans. Marine animals often mistake them for food or get entangled, causing death.
•Plastic bags litter streets, parks and greenspaces, spoiling our surroundings and clogging infrastructure.
•While “Premium Plastic” bags help, they still require specific conditions to decompose and are not the final solution.
Better alternatives exist:
•Reusable shopping bags - Durable, washable bags can replace 500 plastic bags per year per person. Look for sustainable natural materials like cotton or canvas.
•Paper bags - Also biodegrade more easily but still require resources to make and transport. Reuse when possible.
•Bag dispensers - Provide reusable bags for sale on-site. Donate proceeds to environmental causes.
Plastic bags no longer need to be the norm. With 7 billion people on the planet, our daily habits and choices matter. Saying no to plastic bags is an easy step each of us can take to combat pollution in our communities and protect our environment for the future.
