Description

The 1986 Topps Baseball design is easy to recognize. Standard card fronts feature a black and white split border framing a color photo with team name on top and player name on bottom. Borders are mostly white except for a black background bar that takes up the top quarter of the card. The top of the card has the team name in bold block letters and colored according to the teams colors. A small circle at the bottom of the photo has the players position. Finally, the players name is written in caps across the bottom of the card. Card backs are reddish in color with the players name and vital info at the top. Complete major and minor league stats are provided. When space permits, cards also have a small writeup. Many cards also have an additional box called Talkin Baseball that has a cartoon baseball and a small bit of trivia. Subsets include Pete Rose tribute (1-7), Record Breakers (201-207), Turn Back the Clock (401-405), All-Stars (701-722) and Team Leaders (seeded throughout the set). Manager cards feature the team checklist on the reverse. There are two uncorrected errors involving misnumbered cards; see card numbers 51, 57, 141, and 171 in the checklist below. 1986 Topps Baseball has a pair of insert sets. Glossy All-Stars fall one per rack pack. A separate set of Glossy cards were available through a mail-in offer. Collectors had to send in six different times to build a full set of 60 cards. This was also the first year Topps offered a factory set to hobby dealers.
