Mosaic work, the art of laying small pieces of ceramic tile, glass, or stone on a larger background, such as a wall, floor, or piece of furniture, originated in the Middle East in ancient times. Today it is used as a visual accent, often in an outdoor setting. The projects in this book, by several mosaic artists, range from small items like jewelry to a large birdbath. Many additional examples of mosaic work in interiors and gardens are also pictured to provide inspiration for those who want to design their own projects.

About the Author
Peggy Vance holds an MA in Art History from Christs College, Cambridge, and has worked as an art historian and assistant curator of design at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. She has edited a wide range of books on fine, decorative and applied art, and is the author of Gaugin: The Masterworks, William Morris Wallpapers and Faberge.
Celia Goodrick-Clarke trained as a textile designer in Birmingham and London and taught art and textile design in London. She has worked for a variety of magazines and weekly newspapers including Homes & Gardens, Sunday Express Magazine and Metropolitan Home.
