Clean home theater set-ups (especially set-ups with wall-mounted HD TVs) can require you to store your video equipment (like Blu-Ray players, DVD players, TIVOs, etc.) in a remote place like a closet or another room. Since your remote controls require line-of-sight to control your equipment, you wont be able to use them unless you can send the remote signal which is an infrared (or IR) signal to your equipment with a wired extender.
