Questions&Answers

Trackpad not working? It can be difficult to diagnose the exact problem. Is it the cable? The trackpad itself? Something not aligned correctly? Professionally installed correctly? Any of these could be the issue.

Question 1 : Why doesnt keyboard and trackpad work after battery replacement? The battery works fine, but the fans come on like gangbusters and wont go off.

  • Answer A : For me it worked with a simple SMC reset whilst the machine was turned on: "shift+control+option+power"
  • Answer B : If the trackpad isnt clicking anymore something went wrong during the battery replacement. Resetting NVRAM and SMC wont fix that. I would just open it up again and redo it very carefully, making sure the ribbons are straight and fully inserted, and that they arent connected upside-down or damaged in any way. Also you should be able to reset NVRAM and SMC via USB keyboards for future reference.
  • Answer C : I replaced the keyboard/trackpad ribbon, and everything is working perfectly!
  • Answer D : Have replaced the battery? Its known to press on the trackpad when it blisters. Try to take the battery out and use a straight edge to gage if it has a bulge. If it does then either its either a bad battery or the MagSafe/charging logic is over charging the battery causing it to expand
  • Answer :Make sure the MagSafe chargers cord is not damaged as it could short out the SMC logic which could be the source of the over charging. Also check the MagSafe connector is it clean is it melted and check the cord contacts (unplugged) press on the pins do they retract a bit (dont over press and dont use any metal in the systems socket).

Question 2 : Why is my keyboard/trackpad not working? Unresponsive?Whats a bit more unsettling is that, in the System Preferences, its not even recognizing a trackpad as being connected.

  • Answer: It was possible because of a ribbon that had become loose underneath the battery. Though usually it would take a fall or rather hard jarring of the laptop to dislodge that cable (it should be locked down). The trackpad flex cable carries input from other upper case components as well, so a damaged trackpad cable may affect the functions of the keyboard and power button.
  • Another possible cause is battery swelling. If the charge is not holding, or if theres strange/unusual charging behavior, the battery could be the cause.
