Madison, Wisconsin, 1988 A young woman, Beth Cappadora (Michelle Pfeiffer), travels with her children to Chicago for a high school reunion, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of graduation. Arriving at the hotel, she is in a turmoil just for a minute away from her children. And the irreparable happens, her three-year-old son Ben disappears without a trace, as if dissolving in a crowded hotel lobby. Hope to find the boy melts every minute. Nobody saw him. All searches are fruitless. Time passes, but Beth cannot come to terms with the loss of her child.
9 years pass, the Cappadora family moves to live in Chicago, opens their own restaurant there. And then one day a teenager comes to their new house, offering his lawn mowing services. Beth is immediately struck by the similarity of the boy with her missing child, she is sure that this is her son Ben. Beth secretly takes pictures of the boy and shows them to her husband Pat (Treat Williams) and Detective Candy Bliss (Whoopi Goldberg), who was investigating the disappearance in 1988.
