How Papyrus Is Made?

Papyrus making in ancient Egypt, papyrus productionPapyrus making in ancient Egypt, papyrus production

The papyrus reed that grows in freshwater wetlands near the Nile is still used to make papyrus today. The plant can reach a height of about ten feet. After harvesting, the stalks outer fibers are peeled away from the center and cut into extremely thin, broadly spaced strips. The strips are then submerged in water to remove the sugar. They are then beaten until all of the water has been removed. They are then positioned next to one another, barely overlapping. This unprocessed papyrus sheet is crushed once again and dried for about six days under a substantial weight (often a stone slab). The sheets surface is then polished to a smooth finish after drying by rubbing it with a piece of smooth ivory or a shell. After that, papyrus sheets can be used.
