  • Replace worn timing chain guides at the same time as the timing chain.
  • Replace balance shaft chains along with the timing chain if equipped.

Common Symptoms Indicate You May Need To Replace The Timing Chain

5 Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Timing Chain Include:

  1. Timing chain noise
  2. Check Engine light is illuminated
  3. Rattle from the engine compartment at idle
  4. Engine misfire, loss of acceleration and responsiveness
  5. Engine will turn over but not start

Note:

  • More serious problems will start to arise if you ignore the early signs so make sure to give the timing chain a check as soon as you hear a noise coming from its mounting location.

Part 1-2

Part 1 Preparing for Engine Work

Locate your owners manual; Clean the engine with the proper degreaser thoroughly before beginning; Determine your cars firing order; Disconnect the battery cables.

Part 2 Disconnecting the Radiator

Remove the radiator cap; Open the drain plug to drain coolant; Open the drain plug to drain coolant.

Part 3-4

Part 3 Removing the Drive Belt Components

Locate a routing diagram; Release the tension on the belt; Remove the belt; Remove the heater hoses from the water pump; Remove the water pump; Remove crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer).

Part 4 Removing the Timing Chain

Remove the timing chain cover; Locate marks on your crankshaft and camshaft gears; Locate marks or “bright” links in your timing chain; Set your engine to top dead center; Remove the timing chain.

Part 5-6

Part 5 Installing the New Timing Chain

Lube the gear before installing the new chain; Place the new chain onto the gears while aligning with the marks; Tighten the chain according to your car manuals specifications.

Part 6 Replacing the Crankshaft Seal

Drive out the crankshaft seal with a hammer and punch; Tap the new crankshaft seal into the timing cover; Coat the seal with oil; Reinstall the timing chain cover.

Part 7-8

Part 7 Reassembling the Drive Belt Components and Cooling System

Bolt on the harmonic balancer; Reinstall the water pump; Attach the heater hoses to the water pump; Replace the radiator hoses; Fill the radiator with coolant according to specifications; Rerun the drive belt(s); Tighten the belt; Check one last time to make sure all belts and hoses are connected.

Part 8 Wrapping Up the Job

Reconnect your battery; Start the cars engine; Check for drips or leaks; Check the timing with a timing light.
