The MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) protocol is widely used in the studio and on stage both by amateurs and professionals since the early 80s. It is used for communicating synthesizers, digital pianos, DAW software and other music devices which has MIDI connections. There are 3 main ways to connect MIDI devices:

Classic 5-Pin DIN MIDI

The Classic MIDI cable is a 5-pin male/male DIN cable. If you want to play two synthesizers at once, you must connect a MIDI cable to the MIDI OUT jack (jack through which data is emitted) of the first and the MIDI IN jack (jack through which data is received) of the second. If you want to connect multiple MIDI units to the suite, you will need the THRU MIDI jack so that data from one instrument can be sent to several others.

USB As MIDI

A MIDI interface is required when you are going to connect an instrument with only 5-pin MIDI DIN connections to a computer with only USB ports. You will understand: these two are not compatible. A MIDI interface allows you to get the MIDI data from your instrument in your DAW.

USB MIDI Interface

USB-MIDI is a more modern method. If, for example, you want to plug a USB/MIDI keyboard into your computer, youll need a standard USB cable (USB-A to USB-B or USB-C to B ). The vast majority of USB/MIDI keyboards come with such a cable.

FAQ

Question 1: Im not sure how to switch between different modes. How do I do that ?

Answer: The DigitalLife MIDI-Box has a mode-switch button that you can use to switch between different modes. Please refer to the user manual or online tutorials to learn how to perform this operation.

Question 2: Ive connected the MIDI Interface Box to the USB port of my computer, but why does it seem like its not working ?

Answer: In MIDI Merge or MIDI Thru modes, please connect it directly to an external USB charger. In USB-MIDI mode, connect it directly to the computer.

Question 3: Im using it in MIDI Thru mode, but why does my device seem out of sync ?

Answer: Ensure that you have switched to the correct MIDI-Thru mode. Do not connect it to the computer through USB. Also, check if your devices are properly configured for the MIDI channel.

Question 4: Is external power required ?

Answer: In USB MIDI mode, connect it directly to the computers USB port. In MIDI Merge or MIDI Thru modes, connect it directly to an external USB charger.

Question 5: Is it compatible with my music software ?

Answer: Generally, the DigitalLife MIDI-Box is compatible with most mainstream music production software. In specific cases, please consult the vendors documentation to ensure compatibility.
