100% Pure Silk

Shepherd Textiles Tussah Silk is pure silk fiber. It contains none of the artificial dyes, sulfide bleaches, or other additives that are common in commercial silk. The fibers are harvested from the cocoons of the tussah silk moth anthaerea pernyi and professionally carded and combed in the UK to make a beautiful, soft sliver.

Luxurious, Silky Soap

Tussah silk adds a wonderfully slippery, silky feel to hand made soap. Our UK-milled silk is specially selected for the needs of home soap makers, and a pinch (1/2 gram) will dissolve easily in the lye solution. A two-ounce package contains enough silk to make more than 100 five-pound loaves of soap.

Spin Vibrant Yarn

Tussah silk is stronger and more durable than other varieties of silk, and it can be spun into lustrous yarn that is tough enough for weaving or knitting wearable garments. Tussah silk yarn will also take dye beautifully, and is the perfect canvas for experimenting with your favorite acid dyes or natural dye extracts.

Start With a Pinch

Start by removing a pinch of silk from the combed sliver. For a five-pound loaf of cold process soap use 1/2 a gram of tussah silk--about as much fiber as a loose cotton ball (see photo).

Cut Into Pieces

Cutting the long silk strands into smaller pieces will help them dissolve more easily. Using scissors, cut the fibers into lengths of about an inch.

Add Water and Soak

Scatter the cut up silk into the container you will use to make lye solution. Pour the distilled water over the silk and let it soak for 5 minutes; this will also help the silk dissolve more easily.

Add Lye and Dissolve

Add lye as called for in your soap recipe. The silk threads will begin to break down into silk proteins as the solution heats up. Stir well with a silicone spatula until fully dissolved, about 1 minute.
