What is ignition switch ?
The ignition switch is one of the most important electronic components. It is usually located on the steering column, just behind the ignition lock cylinder. The two work together to power on and start the vehicle. When you insert and then turn and hold the key at the “start” position, power is supplied from your vehicle’s battery to the starter motor to start the engine. The ignition switch has several positions that power on different systems as the key is turned. Most ignition switches will activate the electrical accessories on the first position, power on the fuel and ignition systems on the second position, and crank the engine on the third.
In addition, an ignition lock cylinder also serves as a vehicle’s most basic theft deterrent because it makes it harder for other people to drive it without proper key.If you let cylinder get to the point where you can no longer turn the key in ignition, you will end up having to replace the entire ignition switch assembly.
To determine if you have ignition switch problem rather than starter motor problems listen to see for the sound of the starter motor actuating. If you can hear nothing there is actually a ignition trouble because a bad starter motor will usually produce a click.
